ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Besides livestock, rides and shows, perhaps the greatest attraction to the Great Allentown Fair, which starts Wednesday, is the food.

And while attendees can always find fair comfort food such as sausage, cheesesteaks, apple dumplings, waffles and ice cream, burgers, hot dogs and, of course, funnel cake, the fair has always sought to offer something different.

So 15 new food items will by vying for votes this year as the fair's best new food offering.

As is tradition, fair President Daryl G. Urmy has challenged concessionaires to come up with a new treat at their stands for fairgoers to try throughout the week.

Maps with the location of the participating food stands — and ballots — will be available inside the Agri-Plex, at fair information booths and at participating stands.

Completed ballots must be dropped off at entry gates, information booths or in the Agri-Plex.

Stands participated will be denoted by a red diamond-shaped sign asking visitors to vote for the best food.

Of course, all of those traditional fair options and more still will be available at various vendors throughout the grounds.

Allentown Fair runs Wednesday through Labor Day Monday, Sept. 4. Hours are 4-10 p.m. Wednesday, noon-10 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, and noon-9 p.m. Monday.

Regular gate admission is $10, with 12 and under free.

New food vying for your taste buds and votes are:

A huge meatball stuffed with mozzarella cheese with a sweet coating, deep fried, then covered in cheddar cheese and a choice of sauce. Chicken or beef options will be available.

A homemade Belgian waffle topped with one scoop of vanilla, one scoop of chocolate, crushed up peanut butter cups, peanut butter sauce, and chocolate drizzle, finished off with a topping of whipped cream.

Potato chips topped with shredded cheese, bacon, ranch, and scallions.

Bao buns filled with pulled pork or chicken, choice of sauce (BBQ, Thai chili, Latin, cheese), and crispy onions. Bao buns are steamed buns that are light, fluffy, and soft.

Vanilla, chocolate, mint, or cookies & cream. Perfect for coffee lovers and a great way to cool down on a hot day.

Homemade apple-dumpling-style treat made with fresh blueberries and topped with blueberry sauce.

Homemade deep fried Nashville Hot Chicken Balls served with our homemade Nashville sauce and pickles.

Vanilla pudding, cream cheese, Nella wafers, and bananas.

12 inches of thickly sliced skewered bacon smothered in our Bourbon cinnamon sauce topped with vanilla drizzle.

Spicy, hot pork sausage on Italian bread with onion, peppers, and red marinara sauce

Ribs marinated in homemade seasoning sauce with peanut butter and grilled on open flames. Available in beef or chicken.

A manicotti shell stuffed with sausage, creamy cheese, jalapeños, apple and seasonings wrapped with bacon and glazed with a mouthwatering BBQ sauce.

Made from scratch melt-in-your-mouth Italian donuts rolled in sugar

Corn dipped in butter with sour cream, Tajin seasoning and sprinkled with Cotija Cheese

Birria Tacos are an authentic chili-dipped corn tortilla grilled to a crisp that are filled with perfectly slow cooked seasoned shredded beef, melted cheese, cilantro, onion, and a wedge of lime. Served with a side of consommé, a beef broth to dip your tacos in.
